Strachey's classic novel was first published in 1949 and captures the awakening passions of an English adolescent sent away for a year to a small finishing school outside Paris, where she develops an infatuation for the headmistress. In 1951, Colette wrote the screenplay for a film adaptation, and in 1999 the novel was included on the Publishing Triangle's '100 Best Gay and Lesbian Novels of the 20th Century' list.
