Such are the thoughts of the narrator as he recovers from a stroke which has left him suffering from tunnel vision. Looking back to a period he spent in Japan, he hopes to recapture some of the euphoria he felt upon discovering a new culture. Languidly retracing those intoxicating days, he introduces us to the principal figures in his life: his rich wife, bored and unhappy in the suffering heat; his research assistant, the quaint yet efficient Miss Morita; his inscrutable houseboy Hiro; and a host of other intriguing characters. Absorbed into his work, he fails to notice the darker forces at work beneath his apparently tranquil existence. Many years later, his restricted vision forces him to look inward where, paradoxically, he begins to see events with renewed clarity, and his idle musings are suddenly shattered by a shocking realisation which hurls him into oblivion.
