This novel is set in 19th century Kabul, from where the explorer and writer Alexander Burnes persuades the British government that Afghanistan should be the next step in the expansion of their Empire. Also caught up amongst these plans is Masson, an effete and reluctant soldier. He has harboured a fascination for the East since childhood, and after being brutally raped by his officer in command, deserts the army and reinvents himself on the streets of Kabul.
