Gideon, an Englishman and fledgling homosexual, takes up a teaching post at a language school in 1980s Paris. The school has numerous gay men on staff and they enliven the staffroom with details of their numerous sexual conquests. Poor Gideon's limited liaisons have been too awkward or disastrous to boast of and eventually, to compete, he begins to invent tales of his sexual adventures. However, with the advent of HIV/AIDS, Gideon finds himself in a tricky position. His fellow staff members are falling sick and they are beginning to wonder - given his torrid tales - why has Gideon been spared? This is a beautiful, profane and witty novel about hedonism and the price of passion.
